Bethany Chamberlain was commissioned amongst a group of 8 artists to create a piece of artwork in response to Central Square, a shopping mall which was also the location of an old train station. The artists, Emily Harling, Ben Allen, Tanith Rhodes, Glen Ogden, Ruth Saltman, Seren Oakley and Beth Chamberlain were funded £200 to create a sculpture or installation in the space.

CENTRAL SQUARE 21ST-23RD JUNE

Trading Spaces: Gallery

"Bethany Chamberlain is an interdisciplinary artist most recently working with film and installation. Her work looks at the philosophy of repetition and continuation through experimental methods of film making. Structural film examines the raw elements of film as a medium, for example light and sound, as agencies in themselves which form part of the narrative of films. The idea of the sculptural piece was influenced by the work of film artist Tony Conrad who recently exhibited ‘Ten Years Alive on The Infinite Plain’, a two hour long analogue film piece made up of 5 projectors and continuous line visuals. Considering the seamless flow of film and movement, the idea was to create a projector-style sculpture displaying a scratched super 8 film running between two reels. The process of the film turning on the spool becomes the ‘event’ in itself: a deconstructed projector, where there is no ‘end result’ of a real image or motion film. Influenced by Greek mythology, the structures could be thought of as the looms which thread our future; each pair representing each of The Fates. The abstract concept of change and the constant movement of energies is present in the work, referencing the flow of people in the city of Leeds, public transport (Central Square having been a site previously used as a train station) and the repetitive actions in our daily lives."
